| The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has turned sharply south (-23nT). Geomagnetic storm conditions could persist over the next several hours. Aurora sky watchers should remain alert. EXTENDED WARNING: Geomagnetic K-Index of 6 expected |
| Solar activity during the past 24 hours was at low levels with only minor C-Flares detected. AR 2964 turned onto the west limb and out of direct view. Additional C-Flares and perhaps an isolated moderate M-Flare will remain possible as we head into Monday with AR 2965 in the NE quadrant being the most likely source. The story of the day was the earlier than predicted CME passage. This unfolded at 1052 UTC (Mar 13) with a solar wind increase to near 600 km/s. With a few periods of southward Bz, this helped to generate Minor (G1) to Moderate (G2) storming at higher latitudes. The Bz has since shifted north, however fluctuations will be likely as the enhanced solar wind stream continues to move past Earth. A geomagnetic storm watch will remain in effect. Aurora sky watchers should remain alert once dark outside. |
