Rogue wave off BC coast sets record

Scientists said this month they've now verified the most extreme rogue wave on record. The wave struck off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, on November 17, 2020. It was 58 feet (17.6 m) high. It didn't cause damage to any ships or land. Just one lonely buoy - floating in the open sea - recorded the event. The scientists said a rogue wave such as this should only occur once in 1,300 years! Read about the record-setting rogue wave.

Quadruple asteroid is 1st of its kind

On Monday, the European Southern Observatory announced the existence of the 1st asteroid known to have 3 companions. Elektra, which lies in the main asteroid belt, already had 2 known moons, making it a triple asteroid. Then a team of astronomers found an even fainter, inner moon, making Elektra the 1st quadruple asteroid on record. Read more.

This date in 1930: Clyde Tombaugh discovers Pluto

On this date 92 years ago, Clyde Tombaugh - just 25 years old - was working at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Tombaugh was continuing the search for a 9th planet that Percival Lowell had begun in 1906. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh compared photos of a single star field - taken 6 days apart a few weeks earlier - and noticed an object was moving against the backdrop of stars. It was Pluto, a small, dim, remote world in our own solar system. Read more.

Watch live as an asteroid safely passes Earth on February 22

A cruise-ship-sized space rock called 1999 VF22 will safely pass Earth early next week. It'll be this particular space rock's closest approach in more than 100 years. Astronomers will be studying the asteroid using radar. The Virtual Telescope will also air its flyby live. And you can use a (large) backyard telescope to watch it slide past. Details here.
